This Sunday, the Church celebrates Good Shepherd Sunday … the Fourth Sunday of Easter. It is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, a day set aside to pray that hearts will hear and answer the Lord’s call.
When we hear the word vocation, many people think first of priests, deacons, sisters, and religious brothers. And rightly so. The Church urgently needs holy men and women who are willing to give their lives in service to Christ and His people.
In the United States, the number of priests has declined significantly over the past several decades, while many active priests are now at or near retirement age. At the same time, relatively few new priests are ordained each year. The need is real — and so is the importance of prayer.
So this week, pray for vocations.
Pray for young men who may be hearing the call to the priesthood.
Pray for young women discerning religious life.
Pray for deacons, seminarians, and those in formation.
Pray for parents, who often help nurture a child’s openness to God’s will.
Pray for courage wherever God is calling souls today.
But vocation is not only about priesthood or religious life.
Every Christian has a calling from God. Some are called to marriage and family life. Some to generous single life. Some to ordained ministry or consecrated life. All are called to holiness, service, and love.
The challenge is not simply to ask, “What do I want?” but “Lord, what do You want of me?”
That question can be asked at any age and in every season of life.
This week’s issue of Genuflect focuses on vocations: discernment, signs of a priestly calling, paths to the diaconate or religious life, the beauty of sacramental marriage, and more.
May Good Shepherd Sunday remind each of us that Christ still calls His sheep by name … and that true joy is found in following where He leads.
