Hey there,
A package arrives at the doorstep in a day. A movie streams in seconds. Answers are available with the tap of a screen. We live in a world shaped by instant gratification, where speed is often mistaken for success.
And yet, in Barcelona, Spain, a very different story has been unfolding.
Construction on the Basilica Sagrada Família began in 1882. Generations of architects, artisans, and laborers dedicated their talents to a church they knew they would never see completed. Antoni Gaudí himself spent the last years of his life immersed in the project, fully aware that others would have to carry the work forward long after he was gone.
There is something deeply countercultural about that kind of commitment. It raises uncomfortable questions for those of us accustomed to measuring progress by how quickly we can achieve our goals. What are we building? What legacy are we leaving? Are our efforts directed primarily toward advancing our own ambitions or toward something far greater?
The Sagrada Família reminds us that some of the most beautiful and meaningful endeavors cannot be rushed. Faith is cultivated over a lifetime. Holiness is formed through countless daily choices. The work of God’s Kingdom often unfolds slowly, quietly, and across generations.
After all, cathedrals aren’t built in a day. Neither are saints.
Perhaps that is the lesson this remarkable church has to offer us today. The goal is not to build our own kingdoms more efficiently but to spend our lives helping to build God’s kingdom more faithfully.
