Hey there,
With all the anticipation (and military buildup) surrounding today’s inauguration in Washington DC, it may have slipped your mind that our Liturgical calendar designates tomorrow as the day of Prayer for the Protection of Unborn Children.
And before leaving office, President Donald Trump declared Friday to be National Sanctity of Human Life Day.
So I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to talk about the important subject of protecting our unborn.
But this time, with a bit of a twist. Stay with me here.
Most of the discussions center around the legal aspects of abortion. It’s one of the most asked questions of Supreme Court nominees. And there’s always a legal case somewhere working its way through the courts.
Despite the Catholic church’s condemnation of abortion, Catholics are split on the subject. In fact, according to a 2019 survey by the Pew Research Center, more than half (56%) of US Catholics say that abortion should be legal in all cases.
Amazingly though, the abortion rate in the US has actually fallen 20% since 2000. And it’s fallen 80% since 1980!
This is wonderful news because it means that despite the availability of legal abortion … in some places up until the time of birth … fewer women are choosing abortion. That is a blessing that all Catholics can celebrate. It’s a testament to the power of prayer and all the other means for assisting women with unwanted pregnancies.
This week’s issue of Genuflect looks at how all Catholics, even those who consider themselves to be pro-choice, can help protect unborn children: what the Day of Prayer and the Sanctity of Human Life Day are about, some prayers you can use, the recent data on abortions, why you shouldn’t lose hope, details on this year’s virtual March for Life, and a recent abortion victory in the Supreme Court.
Regardless of your stance on legalized abortion, you can still pray for the protection of unborn children. We’re called especially to pray tomorrow, but it likely will take more of us praying and doing what we can to protect the unborn to see even more success. But with God all things are possible!
