Hey there,
We’re now well into the second week of Lent.
For some, Lenten sacrifices are going smoothly. For others, the resolve we felt on Ash Wednesday may already feel a bit thinner. And for a few, the plan never quite took hold at all.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Lent isn’t about perfect follow-through … it’s about turning back, again and again, toward God. That’s why this issue of Genuflect focuses on sacrifice itself: why it matters, whether God truly asks it of us, and why giving something up often forms us more deeply than simply adding something new.
We’ll also explore fresh ways to approach sacrifice, options for those who struggle to give up one main thing, what to do if you already broke your resolution, and the witness of a priest whose life reminds us what sacrificial love can look like when fully lived.
If your Lenten sacrifices feel shaky right now (mine do too), take heart. We’re only in the second week. There is still time … not just to get back on track, but to choose a better one.

Defending Sacrifice
Adding something new — like extra prayer — has become a popular approach for Lent. But is it as meaningful as making a Lenten sacrifice? Lynne Freehill-Maye makes the case why “giving something up” is still needed … but it needs to be purposeful.

Our expectations for and even acceptance of sacrifice has changed in our secular society over the years, with most moving away from the practice. But the truth of the matter is, sacrifice is still an integral part of Christian life. This in-depth look at sacrifice is well worth the read. Enjoy.

Penance, Not Perfection
Failed at your Lenten sacrifice already? After being criticized for “only” giving up chocolate, Fr. Goyo Hidalgo offers a refreshingly honest reminder of what penance is really about—and why trying again matters more than choosing the “hardest” sacrifice.
