Hey there,
Have you heard the one about the Catholic Priest who discovered his Baptism was invalid? Not only was he not a Priest, but he wasn’t even Catholic!
Unfortunately, it’s no joke. Father Matthew Hood watched a video of his Baptism from 30 years earlier and heard the Priest use the wrong words … “We baptize you” instead of “I baptize you.” And according to the Catholic Church, that invalidates the Baptism.
The Church moved quickly to confer the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist on Matthew Hood… and also the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
Then the Diocese had to find all the people to whom Father Hood had conferred sacraments so marriages could be performed, confirmations held, and confessions heard. Not to mention the work to locate all the other people who, like Father Hood, had the wrong formula used at their Baptism.
One word uttered in error by one man invalidated the Sacrament of Baptism, setting off a chain reaction invalidating a whole host of other Sacraments.
All the Sacraments of the Catholic Church are based on Holy Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium. They are the channel Our Lord uses to pour His grace on our soul. So, naturally, it behooves us to learn as much about them as we can.
Genuflect seeks to help each of us have a better understanding of the Sacraments and the graces we receive from them. This week we begin an overview of what the Sacraments of the Catholic Church are, their origin, and the effects their graces have on us.
