Hey there,
Palm Sunday is always a popular Mass. Who doesn’t want to get some palms to wave around at Mass and take home?
Or to weave into a cross?
We celebrate the triumphant arrival of Jesus to Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. We usually focus on Jesus’ experience. Or maybe the crowd of people welcoming him with palms in the air.
But there’s another unexpected character in the story.
And figs grew upon thorn
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.
And ears like errant wings
The devil’s walking parody
On all four-footed things.
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.Fools!
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.
Catholic apologist Chesterton provides the perspective of the lowly and disparaged donkey who was elevated by Jesus to play an important role.
