Hey there,
Last week the spotlight shone on Paris for the Opening Ceremony of the summer Olympic games.
The Opening Ceremony was advertised as different from any other we’ve seen before. It would not be held in a stadium, but along the Seine with the parade of nations arriving in boats.
Unfortunately, the beauty, artistry, and pageantry of the show was overshadowed by a performance that many people, both Christians and non-Christians, felt was a blasphemous depiction of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. I won’t go into it here … you likely heard about it in the news or on social media.
But it got me thinking about this type of blasphemy and the Catholic reaction to it. We covered blasphemy in relation to the second commandment earlier in the year. But this is different in that it deals with someone else, or others, disrespecting God. And our role to make amends as a member of the mystical Body of Christ.
So this week, Genuflect looks at blasphemy and reparations, beginning with the reactions to the Paris Opening Ceremony and calls for reparation, what reparations are, prayer of reparation, and the consequences of blasphemy.
The news also covered the power outage in Paris after the Opening Ceremony that thrust parts of Paris into darkness … except for the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, which sits on a hill overlooking the city. That image just may have been the most spectacular sight in the City of Light.
