Hey there,
There is so much we work on as Catholics to try to ensure our salvation. Prayer, attending Mass, Reconciliation, good deeds, and trying to keep the Commandments.
We have the lives of the Saints we can model, the teachings in Scripture, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
But one often overlooked and rarely discussed subject is reparation.
Merriam-Webster defines reparation as:
1: a repairing or keeping in repair
2a: : the act of making amends, offering expiation, or giving satisfaction for a wrong or injury
b: something done or given as amends or satisfaction
The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that even after confessing our sins, we still need to repair the harm we inflicted on others:
Many sins wrong our neighbor. One must do what is possible in order to repair the harm (e.g., return stolen goods, restore the reputation of someone slandered, pay compensation for injuries). Simple justice requires as much. (CCC 1459)
In this week’s issue of Genuflect we examine Reparation … what it is, why it’s important for salvation, how to perform acts of reparation, why make reparation, and numerous ways to perform acts of reparation, including prayer, fasting, penance, and Mary’s special five Saturdays devotion.
What makes reparation even more important is not only will it help with our own salvation, but we also are called to perform acts of reparation for the sins of the world. So it’s high time we talk about it.
