Hey there,
The signs of the season are already everywhere … full grocery carts, early Christmas displays, and the steady buzz of people getting ready for next week’s Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. Before long, the pace will quicken even more with Christmas planning and the arrival of Advent on Sunday, November 30th, when we begin a new Liturgical year and return to Cycle A.
But before all of that sweeps us along, there’s a celebration we can’t afford to overlook.
This Sunday, November 23rd, the Church honors the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe … often simply called the Solemnity of Christ the King. It always falls on the final Sunday of the Liturgical year, which may be why it sometimes slips quietly past us amid seasonal noise, shifting dates, and its rather lengthy title.
Yet this feast is anything but minor.
It brings together everything we’ve experienced with Jesus throughout this past year and places Him before us in His rightful place … reigning above all creation, all history, all circumstances.
Genuflect is taking a moment to pause with you, setting aside the swirl of holiday prep to reflect on this powerful Solemnity, what it truly means that Christ is King, and why that proclamation matters profoundly in our world today.
I hope you’ll join me this Sunday in honoring Jesus Christ as King of the Universe … and even more, in renewing our commitment to let Him reign in our hearts and in our lives each day.
Keep Believing—

To fully appreciate the Solemnity of Christ The King, it helps to understand the state of the world in 1922. D. D. Emmons sets the stage for the time and explains how and why Pope Pius XI instituted the celebration in 1925. And changes that were made to it in 1969.

Why is Jesus Called a King?
Father Joe Scott ponders the question as to why Jesus is called a King. After all, Kings are mostly viewed as bad … now and during the time of Jesus. But Jesus redefined what it means to be King. And the Solemnity reminds us to embrace Him above all others in our hearts and in our lives.
