Some are titles based on apparitions like Our Lady of the Pillar, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

In the Litany, Mary is referred to as a Queen 12 times. And in the 5th Glorious Mystery of the Holy Rosary we meditate on the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Yesterday, on August 22nd we celebrated the Feast of the Queenship of Mary, one of her most important titles … and roles. The celebration follows one week after the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But I dare say the Queenship of Mary is not as well known as its predecessor.
So this week, Genuflect shines the light on the celebration of Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. We first look at how Jesus is a King, and why Mary is called a Queen. We look at why Mary’s Queenship matters to us, the feast’s tie to the Assumption, why we should have a devotion to Mary, and why it’s okay to venerate Mary (but not worship her).

No Queen Without a King
In order to understand how Mary is considered a Queen we first must understand how Jesus is a King. Joby Provido explains Jesus’ lineage back to King David. And how Jesus is considered Joseph’s son even though he didn’t have Joseph’s blood.

Significance of Mary’s Coronation
In the Bible as Mary is Assumed into Heaven, she is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth. She holds queenship over every creature in the universe, including us. “For us, we can model Mary’s piety, humility, and love here on earth … Loving her as our queen in heaven, we can turn to her for guidance and intercession.”

Why Call Mary Queen?
You might wonder why Mary is considered a Queen. She wasn’t married to Jesus, nor was Joseph a King. But if you look back at how the mother of Kings were treated throughout history, it makes perfect sense.

The Tie to The Assumption
The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is one week before the Feast of the Queenship of Mary, but it wasn’t always that way. It was Pope Paul VI who recognized the connection between the two feasts. So he moved the Queenship of Mary to August 22nd. Here’s why.

Worship vs. Veneration
Bring up Mary and non-Catholics accuse us of worshipping Our Lady. In case you need a refresher as to why this is not the case, this article does a great job of explaining the Catholic Church’s explanation of how veneration is different and acceptable, if not encouraged.
