Hey there,
Tomorrow, June 29th, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.
Both are Apostles of Jesus Christ.
Both played a significant role in the formation of our Catholic Church.
So you might think each one is deserving of his own special day.
Technically, they each do have an individual feast with the Chair of St. Peter on February 22 and the Conversion of St. Paul on January 25th.
And let’s not forget November 18th when there’s the Optional Memorial for the Dedication of the Basilicas of Peter and Paul … when these two Saints are united once again for a feast day.
This week Genuflect looks at the lives of these two Apostles, what we can learn from them, how we celebrate them now compared to the past, and lots of speculation as to how and why they are joined in the Catholic Church.

Saint Peter, The Rock
Deacon John Bacon explains why he relates so well to Saint Peter. And it’s not so much due to the strength of the Apostle’s faith. It’s just the opposite. It has more to do with the weaknesses that Peter displayed … and overcame to become the foundational rock of our Church.

Saint Paul’s Biography
Paul did not personally know Jesus Christ, and in fact, he persecuted Christians until his incredible conversion. Here’s a biography of the Saint who some ironically consider to be “the second founder of Christianity.”

Two Apostles, One Lesson
Peter and Paul became followers of Jesus Christ from very different lives, and in very different ways. But Rosemary Bogden points out that perhaps the greatest lesson we can learn from these two Saints who share a feast day is that God can choose whomever He wills.

A Holy Day of Obligation?

The Catholicizing Principle
Peter and Paul barely knew each other, so why are they so intertwined now? Father Jeffrey Kirby provides a history lesson of ancient Rome that often resulted in the early Christians Catholicizing.

Forgotten Customs
Have you ever heard of “Summer Lent” or the “Apostles Fast?” How about “The Commemoration of all Holy Popes?” These are just a few examples of early Church customs that have fallen to the wayside. Matthew Plese suggests we don’t have to totally write them off.
